어느 쪽으로도 발을 내딛기 힘든.
사방이 어두침침해서,
무엇을 찾기도 힘든 곳일세.
This place is a place
where it is difficult to take a step in any given direction.
All around has grown dark,
It is a place where it is difficult to find anything.
책상에 펼쳐놓은 책에
그녀는 고개를 묻고 있다.

She bends over the book again.
She takes in a deep breath,
and hears the 뚜렷한, 분명한 sound of her inhalation.
말을 잃은 뒤
때로 그녀는 느낀다,
자신이 들이쉬고 내쉬는 숨들이 말과 닮았다고.
마치 목소리처럼 대담하게 침묵을 건드리는 듯하다.
Since losing speech,
she gets the sense sometimes
that her inhales and exhales 닮다 speech.
They seem to stir the silence as boldly as the voice does.
그녀는 비슷한 생각을 했다,
어머니의 마지막 순간을 지켜보면서.
She’d had a similar thought
while witnessing her mother’s final moments.
당시에 의식불명이었던 어머니가
한차례 더운 숨을 내쉴 때마다
침묵이 한 걸음 물러섰다.
Every time her mother, by then in a coma,
expelled a mouthful of hot breath,
silence had taken a step back.
어머니가 숨을 들이마시면

the shudderingly cold silence had shrieked
as it was sucked into her mother’s body.

She examines the small black letters,
conspicuous on the coarse grey paper,
the diacritics that resemble insects
both curled up and stretching their backs.
A place in shadow, obscured and difficult to tread.
더 이상 젊지 않은 플라톤이
고심하며 시간을 버는 문장.
누군가의 불분명한 목소리,
손으로 입을 가린 사람의.
A sentence in which Plato, no longer young,
ponders and stalls for time.
The indistinct voice of someone
whose mouth is 숨긴, 가린 behind their hand.
그녀는 더 힘주어 연필을 쥔다.
조심스럽게 숨을 내쉰다.
She tightens her grip on the pencil.
Carefully, she breathes out.

그녀는 원래도 절대로 많은 시간을 쓰는
사람이 아니었다,
거울을 보는 데.
하지만 이제는 그런 생각조차 이해되지 않는 듯하다.
She’d never been one
to spend a great deal of time
examining herself in the mirror,
but now the very thought seems incomprehensible to her.
각자가 가장 자주 상상하는 얼굴,
평생 가장 자주 상상하는 얼굴은 자신의 얼굴일 것이다.
The face we each imagine most 자주
over the course of our lives must be our own.
하지만 더 이상 자신의 얼굴을 떠올리지 않게 되자
차츰 그녀는 그것이 비현실적으로 느껴지기 시작했다.
But once she stopped picturing her face,
she found that over time it began to feel unreal.

이따금 그녀는 자신이
어떠한 형태의 물질에 가깝다고 생각한다,
사람이라기보다는 움직이는 고체나 액체라고.
Sometimes she thinks of herself
as more like some form of substance,
a moving solid or liquid, than like a person.
따뜻한 밥을 먹을 때
그녀는 자신이 그 밥이 된다고 느낀다.
차가운 물로 세수를 할 때
그녀와 그 물 사이에는 구분이 없다.
When she eats hot rice,
she feels that she herself becomes that rice,
and when she washes her face with cold water
there is no distinction between her and that water.
동시에 자신이 결코
밥도 물도 아니라고 생각한다,
그보다는 가혹하고 단단한 물질이라고.
그 어떤 존재와도 끝끝내 섞이지 않는.
살아 있든 그렇지 않든.
At the same time she knows
that she is neither rice nor water,
but some 가혹한, solid substance
that will never commingle with any being,
living or otherwise.
